From the team who created 2014’s much-acclaimed BEYOND exhibition comes AKWAABYTES, an innovative, pop-up group show that opened in Accra on 2 October 2015. Once again this exhibition is conceived and curated by BEYOND COLLECTIVE founding member Rania Odaymat, and hosted by La Maison founder Nada Moukarzel. For this second collaboration, the exhibition’s theme was inspired by digital connections, chain reactions and the ubiquitous sound-bites and snappy chatter of social media. The works presented were “stand-alone” units or “digits” that can be woven into a greater whole, but with no restrictions on medium.
Accordingly visitors to the show could look forward to strange alliances and pieces crafted in audio, wearable formats, plastic, metal, wood, photography, film, paint and paper, from a radical and inspired group of creatives including Nana Anoff, Panji Anoff, Nii Obodai, Rania Odaymat and Nada Moukarzel. For this show the artists were joined and inspired by Lebanese artist Jean-Marc Nahas, who came for the first time to West Africa to partake in the show and create some of his pieces in real time.
AKWAABYTES was on from 2 – 8 October at the newly launched La Maison space at Icon House, which was transformed into a gallery space for the duration of the exhibition.
